Puppies!!

3 Weeks Old!

The pups are now 3 weeks old! They walk around (awkwardly), rough house, eat, sleep, and repeat! They are getting to the point now that we will be taking them outside for their first adventure. Their daddy gets into the whelping box and likes to push them over, so I am sure he will love to play with them outside in HIS territory :

2 week catch up!

Sorry I had some pictures to post last week, however I went on a last minute trip and amongst the chaos these pictures seemed to have been forgotten. These were taken right after their first bath, so they still look a little wet.

The pups have changed so much. Their eyes are open now and just barely they started to walk around. They are very clumsy and so cute. Mr. Green is our wrestler. He is usually the one I see barking at the wall and growling. He also likes to get in and rough the other two up. Mr. Blue and Miss Purple seem to be more low key, however that can always change by the time they go home :)

Our New Litter!!

The pups have been born and they are already a week and a half old!!! This litter is SO much easier than the last... going from 14 to 3 doesn't seem so bad ;)

Bindi went into labor on July 4th and FINALLY on the 6th delivered them (the exact same day she had her last litter!!). The first two were 2 hours apart and the little girl was an hour later. She was born in the backyard. Aaron took Bindi out for a potty/"lets get this last puppy out" break and it worked!

All of the pups are healthy and growing like weeds. They had a vet visit today and the biggest is over 3 lbs and the smallest is just shy of 2 lbs. They all look great and we expect their eyes to open up any day.

Bindi is doing an amazing job with these pups. She doesn't seem as overwhelmed and is very calm and relaxed laying in the whelping box all day. It is like pulling teeth to get her to leave the pups for more than a few minutes to go outside for a potty break. She had plenty of the "protective" mom in her.

Anyways, I have tried a couple of times to get some pictures posted but for some reason I have been getting errors. Not sure what that is all about. At least you have a little bit of an update and I will keep trying to get their new pictures up.

***As requested... since I took off all the old posts, I will put up the one year old pictures of our last litter. I am still working on collecting pictures (just missing a couple), and then I will get that posted as promised***

Kibbles and Bits

We've had many conversations with people about what to feed a Great Dane and here are our two bits.

A very important part of a growing Great Dane puppy is the right kind of nutrition so I wanted to put a little post on here about what we've found that works. You'll be amazed at how fast your little pup will grow and regular puppy food won't do (even if you pay a fortune for it). You want to make sure your puppy doesn't grow too fast and regular puppy food is way too high in protein and fat for giant breed dogs. They need to have controlled growth so they can develop properly and you don't have health problems. In all the research we have done we kept running across Eagle Pack as a recommended food. Our dogs grew up on their large and giant breed puppy food and we couldn't be happier.

There are a lot of good foods out there and you are welcome to use whatever you want, but make sure you do your research first to ensure that your pup is getting the right balance of protein, fat, etc. Eagle Pack isn't something you can find at every pet store, but there are enough stores around that carry it. On their website you can locate a store near your house. The website is http://www.eaglepack.com/ There is also a whole section on their website about giant breed dogs that you can check out.

The closest store that sells Eagle Pack to our house is 30 minutes away so we opted to have our food shipped to our house. We found a great place to get the food and we pay roughly the same price for a bag shipped to our door (I'll save the drive any day). They put two bags to a box so if you order an odd number of bags you pay a higher shipping price per bag (yes I am a nerd and did the calculations).

The moral of the story with your new puppy is not to take any shortcuts with their diet. They need to grow at the right pace and you don't want them overweight (especially as they grow). We have found that Eagle Pack did a wonderful job with Tucker and Bindi and we wanted to share our findings with you. Good luck!
